Introduction

This project designs a curriculum for a seventh grade health class in a public middle school in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. We have focused on a food and nutrition unit. For this unit, seventh grade students will be learning about healthy dietary choices and the role of food in culture. The unit will cover topics of nutrition and food choices that relate to students' personal lives as well as other cultures. We will start with each individual student focusing on him/herself by creating food journals using dipity.com to introduce students to a new electronic resource and the possibilities in creating a timeline with graphics and comments about their individuality. As the unit progresses, students will gain wider knowledge of nutrition and then finally regarding typical diets and information about food in other countries and cultures. Both Maryland State Content Standards and Standards for the 21st Century Learner (AASL) will be met by combining technology-based resources, to help generate and maintain interest in the unit and enable students to make and share personal connections and perspectives. Reflection assignments, presentations, and graphic organizers will also be employed to help direct and evaluate student activity. Students will learn how to use technological resources, including researching databases using keywords to complete the graphic organizers and reflection papers, as well as using web based tools to create visual representations of the information that they have.
